HOW
TO SELECT / CHOOSE A GOOD PEST CONTROL COMPANY
If
you have a pest control problem, either at home or at
work, you should consider a professional pest control
operator to solve it. A qualified pest control operator
has special training, experience and the tools to assure
protection against destructive insects, birds and rodents.
Just as important in today's environmentally sensitive
age, the professional knows the proper, safe methods of
selecting and applying protective chemicals, something
you may not learn at the local hardware store or large
retailer. In most cases, the application of pesticides
alone will do little without other non chemical strategies
being implemented. We suggest the following guidelines
to follow in selecting a pest control service.
-
Ask your neighbors and friends. It's quite likely
that someone you know has encountered a pest problem
before and has a reputable firm to recommend. Inquire
about the type of pest problem and how satisfied they
were with the service.
-
Check the company's professional affiliations. Membership
in Pest Control Operators of California is a good
indication that the company has access to modern technical
information and has pledged to follow the strict code
of ethics. A member of the Structural Pest Control
Board (our licensing agency) once remarked that they
noticed that while a majority of the industry belonged
to Pest Control Operators of California, the majority
of companies who were brought up on complaints were
not members of the association.
-
Reach a complete understanding with the company before
work starts. Find out what the pest problem is and
how it will be treated. It might be a good idea to
get the treatment plan and period in writing as well
as what you can expect as a result.
-
Read the guarantee. Many companies offer them. But
there are limitations. So be sure you fully understand
what the company is offering.
-
Buy value, not price. What appears to be a real bargain
may need a second look. A higher price may come with
better service or more frequent visits. Check it out;
apples to apples. Pest management plays a major role
in living healthier, more comfortable lives. The pest
management professional relies on pesticide application
as just one part of a total pest management program.
The untrained consumer who purchases an over-the-counter
pesticide can only make an intuitive judgment on proper
application. The professional pest management technician
relies on training, expertise and more sophisticated
techniques to apply pesticides in an environmentally
conscientious manner.
Consumer
Tips on Purchasing Pest Control Services
While
much of California is very temperate, we have a great
diversity of climates which creates a perfect breeding
ground for thousands of insects and rodents. That's why
the pest control industry here is one of the nation's
largest. Before you buy pest control services here are
some answers to frequently asked questions.
How
is the Pest Control Industry Regulated?
The Department of Consumer Affairs, Structural
Pest Control Board (SPCB) licenses pest control operators
and regulates the application of pesticides and services
related to general household and industrial pest control,
and termites and other wood destroying organisms. The
Cal-EPA, Department of Pesticide Regulation licenses and
regulates the practice of pest control in non-structural
areas, such as food production and ornamental pest control.
What
Pest Control Services Do I Need?
That depends on the nature of your pest problem. Household
and yard pests are often treated on an annual contract,
requiring monthly or quarterly visits or a one-time treatment
with an annual guarantee. Programs that include the application
of materials and products at regular intervals may be
unnecessary if no infestations exist, however. Also, problems
generally arise in the warmer and more humid months of
the year (nearly all here in most California). It is always
a wise idea to get more than one quote for any service,
and pest control is no exception. It might be a good idea
to get the treatment plan in writing. The company can
explain the nature of your pest problem and how it will
be treated. If the pests in question are termites, there
are several options available, but the treatments are
likely to be more expensive.
How
Can I Find a Reputable Pest Control Company?
Ask relatives, friends or neighbors for recommendations.
Make sure any pest control company you contact has an
up-to-date
license. Check the company's professional affiliations
like Pest
Control Operators of California, or your local Chamber
of Commerce. Remember, you get what you pay for, and like
all other services, good quality work may cost a little
more. Buy value, not price.
CHOOSING
A GOOD TERMITE COMPANY (EXTERMINATOR)
- Make
sure the company offers a guarantee , understand the
terms and conditions and how long the guarantee is
offered.
-
A good reputation in the market is a good indicator
of good service.
Check your local Better Business Bureau or Department
of Agriculture, to see if complaints have been filed
against the company you have in mind.
- Verify
that the firm you select is a member of your state
pest control association and the National Pest Control
Association.
Membership in the National, and state or local pest
control associations is a good indicator that the
company has access to modern technical information
.
In the area of termite control, their commitment to
further education is important, particularly with
the newer baits and baiting techniques on the market.
- Seek
at least 3 different proposals.
It is important to request the plan of work revealing
sites of termite activity and treatment procedures.
Ask for written information on chemical treatment
procedures, bait station placements, repair of wood
work, warranties, and copies of insecticide labels.
Compare bids before making decisions. Ask about liability
insurance.
-
Follow-up
inspections should be included in any termite treatments
. Extermination contract should include annual or
semi-annual inspections to verify that a treated
home is not reinfested.
Annual Contracts:
-
Many people think that a annual contract means that
the pest control company re-treats your house every
year. But this is not the case, unless there is evidence
of termite activity in the house, annual treatments
are illegal under both state and federal law.
-
The
pest control company provides an annual termite inspection
of your home in the annual contract. If you or the
company find evidence of termite activity,(and you
are under contract) then the company is liable for
termite treatments.
In most cases, the termite treatment on your house
carries a one-year guarantee from the pest control
company. After the year ends, and the contract is
up for renewal..it is always a question of a need
to renew the contract or not.
-
The cost of a renewal is typically between $75-$200,
depending on the size and construction of the house.
-
"Do
I need the annual contract?"
This question is largely a matter of preference.
1. If
you are planning to sell your home within a couple
of years, a contract would be advisable. It will include
a clearance letter for mortgage companies in the event
of a sale. If termites are discovered at this time
of inspection, the pest control company is liable
for termite treatments.
You do want to consider whether the pest control company
will allow their contract to be transferred to a new
homeowner or does it terminate the contract.
2.
If you are not selling your home in a few years and
you feel comfortable doing Home inspections,
you wouldn't need the annual contract. However, upon
finding evidences of termites, you would need to either
do your own termite treatment or look for a termite
service company at this point.
-
Termites are always around us, but that fact does
not mean they are constantly attacking your house.
It simply means that there is always a chance that
termites could find their way into the house. A good
monitoring tool is putting out Termite Bait Stations.
Modern termiticides remain active in the soil for
at least five years , but this is not a guarantee
that termites will not invade your house. A
number of factors, including disturbance of the treated
soil, can affect the chemical barrier and allow termites
opportunities to enter.
-
If
your house is infested when you have it treated, then
you should assume that there could be hidden damage
nearby. Make sure you maintain records and graphs
of all annual inspections and any new signs of termite
activity.
SUMMARY:
Every home has a pest problem from time to time. Some
problems can be solved by you with simple prevention measures
such as:
Eliminating
food, water and a place for pests to hide are parts of
an "integrated pest management" (IPM) strategy. IPM is
a method that uses a variety of strategies including:
exclusion, sanitation, biological control, careful monitoring,
and if appropriate, the application of pesticides.
If
you have a pest problem you cannot resolve yourself, you
may want to call a professional. Professional pest control
specialists can take care of infestations of rodents,
insects such as termites, roaches and ants; and, other
nuisance pests.
When
choosing or interviewing a pest control company:
-
Ask
friends, neighbors or coworkers for recommendations.
-
Don't
depend solely on advertising or a sales pitch to judge
a company's record. Ask for references.
-
Is
there a guarantee for their work? Take time to understand
the company's recommendations for control, any potential
health concerns with the treatment options, and discuss
any questions you may have.
-
Ask
how long it will take to solve your pest problem,
and how often the company will return to do more work
or to track results. Ask the company what other measures
they can take to manage the pest problems, or what
you can do to reduce future pest problems.
-
How
does the company keep its staff updated on new techniques,
regulations and requirements? Professional organizations
and associations tend to keep their members updated.
-
Are
there any unresolved complaints against the company?
Call the Better Business Bureau, the Consumer Protection
Division
If
you choose to use a pesticide...
Some
companies may use pesticides, along with other control
measures. Here are some things you need to know about
companies that apply pesticides:
-
Is
the company licensed? In
California,
-
Does
the company have insurance? California law requires
that pest control companies carry liability insurance
to protect you in case of an accident, and workers
compensation insurance to protect you if a worker
is injured.
-
Is
the applicator certified or registered by the state
of Calfornia? In order to apply pesticides commercially,
a person must be a certified or registered technician.
Individuals gain certification by taking a special
state test. Ask to see the applicator's certification
or registration credential and check the expiration
date.
-
Written
information about the pesticide application being
provided to the customer no later than the time of
the application, including:
| 1. |
The
names, address, telephone number of the firm providing
the service. |
| 2. |
Full
name of the applicator. |
| 3. |
A general
description of the target pest(s) to be controlled
(including the common name of the active ingredient). |
| 4. |
The
time and date of the application. |
| 5. |
Any
precautionary warnings. |
Ask
about special precautions for reentry into the home or
use of the area where pesticides were applied.

ABOUT ORANGE COUNTY CALIFORNIA:
Orange County is a county in Southern California, United States. Its
county seat is Santa Ana. According to the 2000 Census, its population
was 2,846,289, making it the second most populous county in the state
of California, and the fifth most populous in the United States. The
state of California estimates its population as of 2007 to be 3,098,121
people, dropping its rank to third, behind San Diego County. Thirty-four
incorporated cities are located in Orange County; the newest is Aliso
Viejo.
Unlike many other large centers of population in the United States,
Orange County uses its county name as its source of identification
whereas other places in the country are identified by the large city
that is closest to them. This is because there is no defined center
to Orange County like there is in other areas which have one distinct
large city. Five Orange County cities have populations exceeding 170,000
while no cities in the county have populations surpassing 360,000.
Seven of these cities are among the 200 largest cities in the United
States.
Orange County is also famous as a tourist destination, as the county
is home to such attractions as Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm,
as well as sandy beaches for swimming and surfing, yacht harbors for
sailing and pleasure boating, and extensive area devoted to parks
and open space for golf, tennis, hiking, kayaking, cycling, skateboarding,
and other outdoor recreation. It is at the center of Southern California's
Tech Coast, with Irvine being the primary business hub.
The average price of a home in Orange County is $541,000. Orange County
is the home of a vast number of major industries and service organizations.
As an integral part of the second largest market in America, this
highly diversified region has become a Mecca for talented individuals
in virtually every field imaginable. Indeed the colorful pageant of
human history continues to unfold here; for perhaps in no other place
on earth is there an environment more conducive to innovative thinking,
creativity and growth than this exciting, sun bathed valley stretching
between the mountains and the sea in Orange County.
Orange County was Created March 11 1889, from part of Los Angeles
County, and, according to tradition, so named because of the flourishing
orange culture. Orange, however, was and is a commonplace name in
the United States, used originally in honor of the Prince of Orange,
son-in-law of King George II of England.
